Family of Christ Lutheran Church

In the spring of 1986, after an informal get-together and service of prayer, praise and thanksgiving, it became apparent
to the 28 persons in attendance that a mission church was, indeed, something that the Lord was moving them to do. They
continued to meet in homes and, thus, began Ahwatukee Lutheran Church.

In the fall of 1987, they began meeting at Kyrene de la Colina School and chose the official name of Lord of Hosts
Lutheran Church. In the summer of 1988 the congregation moved closer to the foothills, renting from Kyrene de los
Lagos School in the Lakewood subdivision. During this time, Lord of Hosts Lutheran Church was being ministered to by
retired pastors in the Phoenix area. Early in 1989, the congregation, which now consisted of 21 baptized members, began
the process of calling a full-time pastor. On March 29, 1989 Rev. Perry A. Kopatz was installed Missionary-at-Large of
Lord of Hosts Lutheran Church. Within the next few months, in order to emphasize their outreach vision to the
community, Lord of Hosts was renamed Family of Christ Lutheran Church.

The congregation had prayed that one day they might have their own building to worship in. In the summer of 1990, land,
at our present site, became available through the Resolution Trust Corporation. The English District approved the
proposal to construct a combination child development center and multi-purpose room where they could worship.
Ground-breaking for the 10,000 sq. ft. building was held on Sunday, April 26, 1991, exactly five years to the day that the
first service was held. The congregation of Family of Christ held its first worship service in the multi-purpose room on
Thanksgiving Eve, 1992 and opened the Child Development Center on January 4, 1993.

The Lord continues to bless Family of Christ with the addition of staff and new members.  On January 28, 2007 Pastor
Fredrick C. Hearn was installed as Pastor of Family of Christ Lutheran Church.  Pastor Fred comes to Family of Christ
from Praise Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he served from 2000 to 2007.  Prior to Indiana, Pastor Fred
served the congregation of his youth in Lewiston, Idaho from 1995 to 2000.  It was during this time that he married his
high school sweetheart, Darla.  Pastor and Darla have 22 month old twins, Charles and Jasmine.

Family of Christ Lutheran Church has served the Ahwatukee-Foothills community and the southeast Valley since 1985.
Located at 3501 East Chandler Boulevard, Family of Christ also operates a full service Christian preschool/care facility
